IN CARE: The Indiana Coalition for Anti-Racist Education

IN CARE’s work centers on one key goal - a more equitable Indiana. Our advocacy is intersectional, covering racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, disability justice, reproductive rights, and more.

The IN CARE Story

  • IN CARE began when a group of West Lafayette Community School Corporation alumni came together during the summer of 2020 to ask the WLCSC administration for education reform. Together, a group of 800+ alumni wrote a letter with 7 demands, including asking for curriculum reform, anti-racist professional development for staff and teachers, the removal of WLPD from WLCSC campuses, and more. You can read the full letter here.

Later, after a lack of response from WLCSC administration, the group put together a collection of stories from current students and alumni of discrimination and racism experienced at WLCSC schools. You can read those stories and submit your own here.

  • We began under the name WL CARE, and our work didn’t stop after our letter and story collection. We continued to work to improve education in WLCSC schools by organizing a Diversity and Anti-Racism Town Hall, getting involved in the 2020 School Board election, and more.

You can read a full account of our work in the year following WL CARE’s initial letter in our One Year Later series.

Our work grew and began to span across Indiana, and we transitioned to IN CARE. Our goal remains centered on anti-racist education and intersectional advocacy, but we’ve broadened our focus from just West Lafayette.

  • IN CARE’s work focuses on both city-level advocacy and statewide advocacy. You can stay up to date on our work and learn about ways to engage in Indiana advocacy yourself by signing up for our Weekly Organizing Toolkits.

  • Dobbs v. Jackson has overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating federal protection for abortion. Read about Indiana’s current abortion laws here.

  • The WLCSC School Board DEI committee members were required to sign NDAs, and meetings were held in private. IN CARE filed an Open Door Violation on the committee and won. Read more here.
